HUNTSVILLE, AL - Sam Smythe, 4, of Huntsville, Alabama rode his bike successfully today for the first time without training wheels. Today's event follows in the rich traditions of his brother Jonah, who in early 2002 stunned family members with a new found bicycling talent thereby sparking the biking dynasty the family has since become. Sam took to the pedals a full 3 months earlier than his brother and completed his first event, the round the block Tour de English Village without incident.
"Jonah, me and Jonah, we were speeding, uh-huh, and Mommy, Mommy couldn't catch up!" Sam gushed. He further went on to say, "I believe that bikeriding will give me greater mobility around the neighborhood - allowing me to shake the boundaries currently set in place by Mom and Dad."
The incident came about at the urging of Jonah - by now an accomplished cyclist with 2 years experience. Asked for a comment on why he goaded his younger brother into committing to a bicycle lesson today Jonah offered, " 'Cause I wanted to see him. I wanted to see if he could do better at it."
Sam's mother, Wendy Smythe, 29, the ravishing former rifle troup member of the Foley High School Marching Lions, "The Mighty band from Lion Land", again provided support in the endeavor completing the Tour de English village on foot at a record setting pace. Jonah's father Dan, 38, was at work at the time, still smarting over the Twins demise in the AL playoff race and unavailable for comment.
An earlier attempt at bike riding was marred by a disastrous mishap. Newton's Velocipedal Law states that "a narrow based object, at rest, will fall". Sam, unfortunately, was uninformed of this "you gotta pedal" rule and suffered a fall that involved scrapes and contusions. Putting aside fears of further bloodshed, Sam today showed his courageous side and passed this important milestone with speed and a smile.
